It’s a huge misconception that your legs are going to get big and bulky if you spin. “You have to lift heavy weights doing multiple sets to cause muscle growth in your power/strength fibres, and you don’t use these to any appreciable degree during cardio exercise like a spin class” says exercise physiologist Michele Olson, Ph.D., professor of exercise science at Auburn University Montgomery. Studies have also shown that women actually shed targeted fat from their bellies and lower bodies when they cycle more often.
- Low impact
One of the amazing things about spin is how kind it is to our joints without compromising on the intensity of the workout. Spin focuses on intervals and moving from light to heavy resistance, so your legs burn and are challenged, but never feel too fatigued. It is a low-impact yet effective cardio workout that is easier on your knees and ankles than many other forms of cardio, liking jarring activities such as running. Incorporating spin into your workout routine also helps to avoid overuse injuries and give your joints a break every so often.
- Boosts metabolism
Spin classes are the pioneer in interval training. A single session consists of different music tracks and terrain that change up the speed, resistance and your body position, which all spikes the heart rate, followed by quick periods of rest for maximum burn.
