Healing Soup by a Naturopath

Recipe by Alice Laidlaw from Luxton Clinic
  • 1 tablespoon of coconut oil/olive oil (15ml)
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1 bulb of garlic- minced
  • 1 thumb sized piece of fresh ginger grated
  • 1 ½ cup of salted vegetable soup stock 
  • Head of one broccoli, sliced
  • 2 cups fresh, sliced shitake mushrooms
  • ¼ tsp Cayenne powder, or 1 fresh chilli
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder or grated fresh turmeric
  • 1 tsp coconut sugar
  • 2-3 chicken breasts
  • Bokchoy, chopped
  • Coriander – to serve
  • Lemon – to serve
  • 5 cups water
  • Brown rice noodles 



Heat the oil in a soup pot. Add the onion until brown. Add the garlic, ginger, turmeric and stir until fragrant. Add the water and stock. Add the chicken and coconut sugar and stir. Once the chicken is cooked, cover with more water. Add the chilli or cayenne pepper. Bring to the boil and then reduce to simmer. Add the brown rice noodles in and cook for recommended time. Add your vegetables in the last 5 minutes of cooking until just cooked.

Garlic – Garlic contains antimicrobial and antibacterial properties and is a great immunity booster. It is also very high in antioxidants!

Onion – Onion is a mucolytic. This means that it loosens built up mucous and helps the body expel this mucous reducing the occurrence of any secondary infections.

Turmeric – Turmeric contains great anti-inflammatory and antioxidant medicinal actions.

Ginger – Ginger is a great natural anti-inflammatory and is also a great antiviral.

Lemon – Lemon is high in vitamin C and helps to boost our white blood cells increasing the bodies ability to fight off infection.

Chicken – Chicken is a great protein source. Our bodies need adequate protein in order to make sufficient immune cells. Protein is also necessary for repair.

Chilli – Chilli is a very warming herb and may cause your nose to run! This is a good thing as it is expelling unwanted mucous build-up,
